A deadly winter, by Gina Rodriguez
After having worked with the artisans in Cusco and Puno, it is impossible not to be interested in the world of alpaqueros and alpacas. It is a wide world with a lot of social and cultural diversity, where each family has different needs that they cover. Located in several places of the Peruvian highlands, the families of alpaqueros that live in the heights (from 3600 meters above sea level to 5000 thousand meters above sea level) suffer very cold and intense winters that penetrate the bones and snow It’s so intense. . which can reach a height of 1 mt, which prevents alpaqueros from leaving their homes. This is a situation that would have nothing crucial, if the conditions were different, but they live in homes that reach 21 ° below zero without heating and that should be added the snow that covers the roads that are in the places where the alpacas I was wondering if there is no way to help them prepare for the arrival of winter and, although they have had projects to heat the houses, there are still many families to support to build a house that protects them from winter frosts.
It can be said that more government investment is needed, more concern, more interest. But stop saying it, if it’s something that is known. It is better, no matter how small we are, to be interested and see how we can give a solution like this one by one. What do you think?
Now that you know about alpaqueros, I also want to tell you about alpaquitas. These are docile animals whose natural environment to live are the heights and resist very well the cold of the mountains of Peru. Despite this, some die from a cold or from diseases such as pneumonia. It is for them that we have to worry about the entire production chain. Alpacas can live at very low temperatures and then go on to more sunny and warm days, but this is not the problem. The constant change of frost to heat can cause your skin to remain moist for so long that it makes you sick, because the ice that forms in your fiber, and thaws and turns into ice water. Unfortunately, alpaceros do not have the necessary tools to protect them and keep them dry and hot. It is a winter and lonely panorama because the snow also covers the grass they feed on and since the alpaqueros cannot reach them, they can spend up to 3 days without food. Due to this and other reasons, many alpacas are lost year after year, we must definitely join a solution.
